Clear Out Drain Gunk

Here's the equation at our house:
One teenage girl with beautiful long hair + lots and lots of conditioner = shiny locks and a gunked up drain.

Because I have an aversion to toxic cleaners that smell really bad, I use Draino only when absolutely neccessary. Needless to say, I have been searching for an less-offensive way to clear out the crud. Thanks to combined advice from Miss Linda and my grandmother, I now have a solution: baking soda and vinegar. I know, I know...sounds too easy, no way it can work. I thought the same thing. So, of course I tried it and guess what...it does!

I poured about 1/2 cup of baking soda in the drain and slowly followed up with about a cup of white vinegar. The foamy, bubbly concoction went right to work. After a few facinatingly hynotizing minutes watching the foam, I turned on the water and the drain flowed clear.

Apparently, this combo works great on stinky garbage disposal clogs too...can't wait for the next one of those!

  1. If it's ever super stubborn, you can also follow it up with pouring boiling water down the drain after the baking soda and vinegar have bubbled for a minute or so. If you have a fiberglass tub you just have to pour slowly so the boiling water doesn't damage the tub itself.
